Night sailing in tropical waters can be magical. The feeling of peace brought about by sailing under bright constellations is often described as an ethereal experience. There is less light pollution, allowing for stargazing and the bioluminescent plankton in the water to glow.

But for this magic to be enjoyed safely, preparation and planning are vital. As with many regions in the world, unlit vessels, floating ghost nets and large semi-submerged logs add additional perils that need to be accounted for. Plan your route, revise your lights and Colregs — especially the lights you are likely to encounter on your planned route — keep a good watch, prepare the right clothing and food for the trip, including suitable life jackets and safety lines to clip on, and of course maintain your night vision.
